Cali this is such a fantastic breakdown of the entire gamut of taking courses to advance as a writer. Thank you for sharing so generously.

I totally think one has to invest in writing if they want to be serious about it. I don’t think you need an MFA (having a masters in creative writing myself....) but you have to learn story structure. And a book only takes a person so far. So courses and workshops (in moderation) are definitely needed. Tons of reading and practice writing also. And I think authors should also know that nowadays even traditionally published writers. Need to invest in their work - editors, marketing, etc. great post!

For me, investing in my writing sends a message to myself and the universe that I am serious.

Cali, Thank you for your kind words about The Unschool.

This is all such solid advice! There are really some amazing book out there (I've reviewed a number of them) to be read and re-read and worked over, too. As good as anything, for substantially less. And that work in itself develops the persistence needed to write.

Yes! to not going into debt! Oh my.

And a note about taxes (only if you are envisioning your writing as more than a hobby, note!): so long as you can prove you are actively writing (projects and rejection notes) you can write off at least some of your spending even if you have not published substantially yet. Check into this--you have a period of time to make it happen...

Great topic and advice. I've taken and/or taught writing workshops for more than 20 years and just love the process and community.

Being a writing teacher has been one of the best things for my writing, but it is essential to build relationships with writing adults and learn from others. I try to not jump at workshop opportunities, but I've done a few that have been very valuable.
