Want To Change An Annoying Calamity Into A Positive Experience?
Try these two words
Have you ever been annoyed because you’ve had to walk home in the rain or sit on hold for an hour to talk to a government agency or bought a digital product expecting immediate access and it didn’t work out like that?
Today I would like to share with you two words that can change something irksome into a positive experience.
I admit that I saw this on a Substack newsletter from Sophia Money-Coutts. It is not my wisdom but I’ve been trying to remember these two words when some kind of annoying calamity has just occurred.
The two words are:
But luckily…
I’ll use the examples above to demonstrate:
You’ve just had to walk home in the heavy rain but luckily… you had an umbrella.
You’ve just spent an hour on hold to ask a question about your tax return but luckily… you were sitting at your computer and filed away a month’s worth of emails.
You’ve just paid out to take a well-respected personality strengths and weaknesses test but they haven’t emailed with the access code so you now have to wait four hours before their help desk opens but luckily… you have some errands to run so you can do that and then come back to it later.
The last one was me, two weeks ago when I paid for the Clifton Strengths test which many writers rave about. Something went wrong with the access and I had to wait until their office opened in Chicago before I could sort it out. The UK is six hours ahead of Central time, I had carved out a morning to take this test and then start pondering the results and I wasn’t happy about having to wait until mid-afternoon. Then I remembered this phrase, but luckily….
I was still annoyed about my purchase but this phrase encouraged me to change my mindset and do other useful tasks. Later on that day I was able to ring the helpline, the issue was sorted in minutes and I took the test.
It can help with the big stuff too. I’m not enthralled about the new President-Elect in the United States but luckily I’m a writer and I have plenty of work to do so that my latest novel can get out into the world which will give entertainment and escapism to readers. So I’ll turn off the TV, put my head down and get on with my stuff.
What is irking you at the moment? How can you apply but luckily?
Plodding gently
